Stocks face earnings and data hurdles

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks could struggle to stay close to nearly five-year highs next week as worries mount about third-quarter earnings and the market appears primed for a pullback from recent stimulus-driven gains.

A bevy of economic reports, including durable goods orders, will grab attention, particularly after the Federal Reserve unveiled its plan on September 13 for a third round of aggressive stimulus to help revive the flagging U.S. economy.

While the action ignited a rally in stocks, analysts have worried that it may suggest the U.S. economy is in worse shape than many had feared.

To be sure, stocks are at lofty levels and are likely to attract investors hoping the market will ride out the year on a positive note. The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> and the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index <.spx><.inx> remain close to highs not seen since December 2007. The S&P 500 is up 16.1 percent since the end of 2011.

"I think the market certainly is ripe for a pullback. But whatever the pullback, it's going to be rather shallow," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, in New York.

"Any disappointment in key economic data that would reverse the market's feeling the economy has stabilized, I think could trigger a 2 to 4 percent pullback," he added.

Some of that move was seen this week in stocks, which posted slight losses for the week. The S&P 500 slipped 0.4 percent for the week. The Dow industrials and the Nasdaq each finished the week down 0.1 percent.

Besides August durable goods orders, data on personal income and spending is due next week, as well as new home sales and the final read on U.S. Gross Domestic Product for the second quarter.

Housing data has been surprisingly strong in recent months and homebuilder shares have experienced massive gains. The PHLX housing sector index <.hgx> is up 62.3 percent since December 31. But that strength has been offset by worrisome data on U.S. manufacturing, which had been among the economy's strongest sectors. The stubbornly high U.S. unemployment rate also has kept a damper on Wall Street's mood.

THIRD-QUARTER GLOOM AND DOOM

Profit warnings from such high-profile U.S. companies as FedEx helped cement the view this week that third-quarter results could be a drag on the market.

"We've had some pretty negative pre-announcements, and those announcements for this time frame have been a little more than we've had in the past," Cardillo said.

Estimates for S&P 500 companies' third-quarter profits have fallen sharply in recent months, and earnings now are expected to drop 2.2 percent from a year ago, according to Thomson Reuters data. It would be the first such decline in three years.

Outlooks for the third quarter are at the most negative since the third quarter of 2001, the data also showed. The negative-to-positive ratio for the upcoming earnings period stands at 4.3 to 1.

Third-quarter earnings aren't expected to start in earnest until after the second week of October, when Alcoa is expected to kick off the reporting period.

"What I'm worried about is what I don't know," said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management, in New York.

That includes negative surprises on earnings, he said, as well as the chance that China's economy may be slowing faster than economists previously thought.

"The aggressiveness of the (Fed's) quantitative easing has caused me alarm," Cote said.

FLOOR FOR THE MARKET

The Fed's recent action followed a decision by the European Central Bank to support debt-ridden euro-zone nations by purchasing their debt.

Speculation on Friday that Spain was moving toward a bailout request gave investors some relief. The debt-laden country, which is likely to stay in focus next week, said it was considering freezing pensions and speeding up a planned rise in the retirement age as it raced to cut spending and meet conditions of an expected international sovereign aid package.

Both central bank moves are expected to provide a floor for the market, possibly through year end, analysts said.

"Financial markets will benefit more than the economy," said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co., in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

With the Fed's decision out of the way, investors are also likely to turn their attention to other issues, including November's U.S. presidential election, he said, and looming decisions about U.S. fiscal policy.

Out: Three giant rallies a day. In: Fundraisers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Four years ago, the presidential contenders were packing airplane hangars, city squares and college arenas in a sprint to Election Day. This year, the rallies are fewer, the gatherings often smaller.

Barely six weeks before the election, where are President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney spending their time? Fundraisers. The high costs of seeking the presidency ? and changing ideas of how to win ? are shifting campaign schedules at the expense of time-honored candidate-to-voter interaction.

Out: Hopscotching to a couple of states a day, spending hours shaking hands with voters, posing for pictures and trying to win support the old-fashioned way.

In: A quick public event, then a beeline to a hotel ballroom to speak to donors who shell out $50,000 a ticket ? money to pay for TV ads, polling, office space, mailing.

This week, for example, why was Romney in the reliably Republican states of Utah, Texas and Georgia? To collect checks before dashing off to campaign events in Florida, which is still highly competitive, and Las Vegas. Obama picked up some $4 million at a Manhattan fundraiser hosted by entertainer Beyonc? and hubby Jay-Z before a more-traditional, shirtsleeves-in-a-ballpark rally in Woodbridge, Va., on Friday.

Not everyone loves the new reality.

"Romney doesn't seem to be out there campaigning enough," wrote Peggy Noonan, a Wall Street Journal columnist and former speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan. "He seems ? in this he is exactly like the president ? to always be disappearing into fundraisers and not having enough big public events."

Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who was a constant at Sen. John McCain's side during his 2008 presidential bid, put it more directly: Romney should go to the states that are in play and essentially live there.

"In my view, what he should do in the last 45 days .... is pretty simple. If we win Virginia, and one of Ohio or Florida, we're going to win this thing. If I were Mitt Romney, no person in Virginia could go very long without meeting me," Graham said. "This is not rocket science."

Romney is at least acknowledging the criticism. Advisers now say the former Massachusetts governor will increase the tempo of his campaign itinerary so it more closely resembles the intense schedules that have marked previous presidential contests. Next week's schedule includes as many as three stops a day in Colorado and Ohio.

But these advisers also note the hefty price tags on this year's campaign. A week of advertising in Florida alone costs $5 million.

This is the first presidential contest in which both major-party candidates have opted not to accept federal money to pay for their general-election campaigns. In the past, taking the federal dollars allowed contenders to spend the final weeks before the election shaking hands instead of cashing checks. It's not new for Obama: He reversed his pledge to accept public financing in 2008 and instead relied on his own fundraising firepower for the general election.

It's not just about fundraising. With each passing week, it seems the number of states both Obama and Romney are contesting shrinks. At this point four years ago, Obama was advertising in 16 states. These days, he's advertising in nine.

Fewer states in play can mean less reason to travel. But when candidates do travel, they're spending their time differently.

In 2008, for example, GOP candidate McCain didn't miss a chance to glad-hand with a crowd, swinging by the Minnesota State Fair on short notice while in the state for other events.

This year, Romney opted against doing the same, going straight from the airport to a high-dollar fundraiser in a swanky neighborhood and back to the airport. It was the fair's opening day in August, but the only shots of Romney that TV crews got was of a motorcade ? a missed chance to lead the local news.

With the campaign entering its most intense period, Romney's main activities include rehearsing for the three upcoming presidential debates, in addition to raising money. Obama's been spending many days at or near the White House.

Compare Sept. 15, 2008, with Sept. 15 of this year.

Four years ago, it was a Monday when Obama held a town hall-style meeting in Grand Junction, Colo., a 14,000-person rally in conservative Pueblo, Colo., and a fundraiser in Los Angeles. McCain had a morning rally for 3,000 in Jacksonville, Fla., and a town hall event in Orlando. Joe Biden, running for vice president, was at Michigan rallies in Saint Clair Shores and Flat Rock. Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate, was in Golden, Colo.

This year, on a Saturday, Obama was not seen in public and didn't leave the White House. Romney did not have public events, but watched a grandson's soccer game and took wife Ann to an Italian dinner. Biden was at home in Delaware. Only Romney running mate Paul Ryan campaigned; he was in Oldsmar, Fla.

Syria's Assad says rebels will be defeated

(AP) ? The Syrian president said in remarks published Friday that he is adamant his regime will not fall and he also lashed out at Gulf countries, which he accused of using their enormous oil wealth to try to drive him from power.

Bashar Assad's comments came as an opposition group, the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria, accused the regime of being behind the disappearance of two of its leaders.

Abdul-Aziz al-Kheir and Ayas Ayyash were expected to take part in a conference Sunday in Damascus by some 20 Syrian groups that are calling for Assad to step down. But they disappeared Thursday along with a friend who had picked them up at Damascus International Airport, the group said.

The group's head, Hassan Abdul-Azim, told The Associated Press by telephone that the regime was believed to be behind the disappearance.

Syria's crisis began in March last year with anti-government demonstrations inspired by the Arab Spring and demanding reforms. The protests were met with a brutal crackdown by the regime. Syria later became embroiled in a civil war between forces fighting for Assad and those trying to topple him.

Activists now say that nearly 30,000 people have been killed since the crisis began, the vast majority of them civilians.

After Assad's remarks were published, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi told state-run TV on Friday that the president had received nine Egyptian journalists and had a chat with them about the latest developments in the country.

The minister said none of the journalists took notes as the meeting was considered a "personal visit," but a reporter for the weekly Al-Ahram Al-Arabi published some of what was said.

The weekly quoted Assad as saying that the rebels "will not succeed" and that a foreign military intervention such as the one that helped topple Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi will "not be repeated" in Syria.

In his remarks, Assad also launched one of his harshest attacks on Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which have been among his strongest critics and backers of the opposition, saying they are trying to influence the region with their money.

"They think their money can buy geography, history and a regional role," Assad said, according to the Egyptian weekly.

"They are giving terrorists weapons and money with hope of repeating the Libyan model," Assad added. "Instead of helping regional stability, they are supplying armed elements with weapons and training in order to weaken the Syrian state."

The upheaval in Syria presents an opportunity for the Gulf's Sunni rulers to bolster their influence and possibly leave Shiite powerhouse Iran without its critical alliances that flow through Damascus. Assad's regime, which is allied strongly with Iran, is led by the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Syria's ties with the Gulf nations have been strained in the past ? Assad once called Saudi King Abdullah and other Arab leaders "half men" for being critical of Hezbollah over the 34-day war between the Lebanese Shiite militant group and Israel in 2006.

In the briefing, Assad added that the only way to solve the Syrian crisis is through "dialogue with the opposition" and that the "door for dialogue is open."

Most Syrian opposition groups reject any talks with the regime, saying they will not accept anything less than Assad's departure from power and the dissolving of his regime's security agencies.

Abdul-Azim, the opposition leader, repeated that stance and said the opposition wants a "new regime that represents the will of the people."

He added his group will go ahead with the plans for Sunday's opposition conference despite the disappearance of the two leaders. The gathering will invite European ambassadors, envoys from China and Russia, which back the regime.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Friday that nearly 30,000 Syrians have been killed during the 18-month uprising against the Assad regime, providing an updated death toll.

The Observatory's count includes 20,935 civilians; 1,153 army defectors fighting alongside the rebels; and 7,141 Syrian troops fighting for the Assad regime ? which gives a total of 29,229, said the head of the group, Rami Abdul-Rahman.

The list is compiled from reports by witnesses and medical staff, he said, adding that he only includes those identified by name or whose death was authenticated by amateur video. Several thousand who are presumed dead, including pro-Assad troops, have been kept off the list because the bodies could not be identified.

Another Syrian opposition group, the Local Coordination Committees, put the overall death toll at 26,405. However, its count does not include Syrian troops killed in battle. The LCC relies on a network of activists in Syria to collect its information.

Fighting in Syria has intensified in recent week, with the regime increasingly relying on airstrikes to try to drive rebels out of territory they are holding, particularly in the country's north. The air attacks, along with the use of heavy weapons by some of the rebels, have driven up the daily death toll, said Abdul-Rahman.

On Thursday, more than 250 people were killed, including 199 civilians, five army defectors and 46 regimes soldiers, Abdul-Rahman said. August has been the bloodiest month so far, with nearly 5,000 dead.

Meanwhile, in Syria's northeastern town of Ein al-Arab, a gunman on a motorcycle shot dead a leading Kurdish opposition figure, Mahmoud Wali, also known as Abu Jandi, as he walked out of his office late Thursday, Kurdish activists Mustafa Osso and Ibrahim Issa said.

Wali was a senior member of the Kurdish National Council, which includes several Kurdish groups.

Osso said it is still not clear who was behind what he said was a "political assassination."

On Friday, activists reported clashes and shelling in different areas around Syria, with the fighting being most intense in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial capital. The fighting there came a day after regime airstrikes hit a gas station in northern Syria, setting off a fiery explosion that killed at least 30 people and wounded dozens.

Mathematicians show how shallow water may help explain tsunami power

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? While wave watching is a favorite pastime of beachgoers, few notice what is happening in the shallowest water. A closer look by two University of Colorado Boulder applied mathematicians has led to the discovery of interacting X- and Y-shaped ocean waves that may help explain why some tsunamis are able to wreak so much havoc.

Professor Mark Ablowitz and doctoral student Douglas Baldwin repeatedly observed such wave interactions in ankle-deep water at both Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, and Venice Beach, Calif., in the Pacific Ocean -- interactions that were thought to be very rare but which actually happen every day near low tide. There they saw single, straight waves interacting with each other to form X- and Y-shaped waves as well as more complex wave structures, all predicted by mathematical equations, said Ablowitz.

When most ocean waves collide, the "interaction height" is the sum of the incoming wave heights, said Baldwin. "But the wave heights that we saw from such interactions were much taller, indicating that they are what we call nonlinear," he said.

Satellite observations of the 2011 tsunami generated by the devastating earthquake that struck Japan indicate there was an X-shaped wave created by the merger of two large waves. "This significantly increased the destructive power of the event," said Ablowitz. "If the interaction had happened at a much greater distance from shore, the devastation could have been even worse as the amplitude could have been even larger. Not every tsunami is strengthened by interacting waves, but when they do intersect there can be a powerful multiplier because of the nonlinearity."

Ablowitz first observed the nonlinear wave action in 2009 while visiting Nuevo Vallarta just north of Puerto Vallarta with his family. He took hundreds of photographs and videos of the peculiar waves over the next several years.

"Unlike most new physics, you can see these interactions without expensive equipment or years of training," said Ablowitz. "A person just needs to go to a flat beach, preferably near a jetty, within a few hours of low tide and know what to look for."

A paper on the subject by Ablowitz and Baldwin was published this month in the journal Physical Review E.

Baldwin, who is studying under Ablowitz, wanted to go the extra mile to verify that the wave interactions observed by his professor were not unique to one beach. In this case he drove more than 1,000 miles to the Los Angeles area "on a whim" to search for the types of waves Ablowitz had observed in Mexico. He hit the jackpot at Venice Beach.

"I don't think there is anything more enjoyable in science than discovering something by chance, predicting something you haven't seen, and then actually seeing what you predicted," said Baldwin.

SMP at Home: A Surprise Party, Part IV | Style Me Pretty

It?s been quite a day! But the reason that we wanted to break apart this particular party is because we want you to see what a fun and creative process planning something special in your own home can be. This was my first grown-up, I can?t believe we hired a chef and actually had rentals in my home, definitely a splurge kind of party but it was so worth it. Sitting in such a warm and familiar spot, all gussied up and glittery, with the people that you love, sharing wine and laughs and a sense of peace?it was just a beautiful time. Thank you so very much to all of the vendors (listed below) who helped to build this celebration, especially Justin Marantz for trapsing all the way here to capture it on camera. We love you. Click here to see the full gallery.

photos by Justin Marantz

Okay, now that you can see everything together in one spot, I?ll break it down a bit more. Sarah True of True Event was awesome in helping me to think through all of this, refine the design and just be her general amazing self.

The Paper Goods.?I was hugely inspired by Julie Song?s work for her very own wedding featured on Style Me Pretty and when I began conceptualizing this event, my mind was racing with visions of watercolor and art and effortless grace. Julie?s name immediately came to mind. The gracefullness of her watercolor, the modernity of her lettering..it all gave me butterflies so we asked her to create a masterpiece for this event and to say that we were blown away, is the understatement of the century. Julie was exceptional. She took our general concept and came up with a beautiful design, then waterfalled that very vibe down to the hand lettered menus, the fold-out cupcake recipe tags, the amazing bar sign and the gorgeous gilded plate favors. The result was spectacular.

The Flowers.?We wanted the flowers to be French inspired and yet grounded it tradition. We didn?t want too much structure, instead hoping for graceful, easy pieces that suited the intimate environment we were hoping to create, using a collection of pinks, peaches, reds and a deeper hues. Yumiko, of Hana Floral Design ? who is our forever go-to flower genius because she is so inspired, such a breeze to work beside and so thoughtful with her work ? had the idea of using black urns to house the arrangements. Love, love, love the result.

The Decor. For our bar area, we started with the sketch that you saw earlier, then had our newest SMP guru craft do-it-yourself chevron print risers & gorgeous gold leaf coasters (which we have a DIY for tomorrow!). We used a dresser that I have in my home and filled in with pretty flowers and a pop of color through fresh fruit. The gorgeous sign that Julie made was placed on a basic easel that we found at AC Moore and painted gold with this amazing new spray we found.

As for the table, I had a leftover gift certificate to West Elm, which isn?t a bad place to be wildly inspired, so that was my first pit stop. I found these incredible chargers there, filled in the remaining pieces from the china dinnerware set that I already had, and splurged on a new set of gold flatware that will replace my current IKEA brand that I?ve had for a decade. I made absolute sure to only purchase items that I would use in my daily life so the money really was well spent. I found gold hobnail votives on Save on Crafts that finished off the table look.

As a little aside, we had planned to have the entire party outside but rain put a damper on our plans so we moved dinner from outside under the tree, to inside our screened porch. Which actually turned out beautiful and so nice BUT I didn?t get to use these adorable hanging votives that I found on Save on Crafts.

The Food.?For the first time in my life, I hired a chef. I wanted to really enjoy being with my guests and I wanted someone else to be in control in the kitchen. Our menu was inspired by local farms and their offerings and included an amazing collection of foods by Chef Gary Ankin and featured such yummies as seared scallops with a carrot chardonay beurre blanc, pork loin with pickled peach relish and so much more. Gary and his girlfriend, Tammy, made the party run seamlessly and without stress. It was awesome.

The Conversation.?Even though we were all family, I wanted to have a back-up conversation starter on the table, so I printed thoughtful & funny questions on gold paper, then curled them and placed them in two bowls on the table. Judy, our guest of honor, discovered the game and off we went. We ended up going through all of the questions ? which were a combination of thoughtful ?what do you dream for your children? to fun, ?if you had a yacht, what would you name it.? It made for such a fun, laughter & tear filled evening.

The Dessert.?We opted for something inspired by home. Cupcakes. And we chose the ones that made our hearts go pitter patter from last week?s Crush event?Georgetown Cupcakes who graciously delivered 120 cupcakes that were both served and gifted as favors and were promptly devoured in one night. Or close to that at least. We plated a petite selection of our favorites?Salted Caramel, Vanilla with Buttercream, Chocolate Fudge and Red Velvet. I have NO words for how delicious these cupcakes are and we all laughed because each person had a different favorite. They were amazing.

The Favors. We wanted to gift something thoughtful. Because we are of the camp that unless a favor brings something special to the evening, it should be skipped. So we had Julie hand letter some basic white ceramic plates with liquid gold leaf paint. She painted festive sayings like ?celebrate? and ?yum? on each, then tied them with an amazing fold-out card containing a recipe for Salted Caramel Cupcakes. A box of mini cupcakes was also gifted to tie everything together.

Music. We stuck to a simple playlist. Michael Bubble and the soundtrack from Midnight in Paris.

Do ? it ? Yourself. We have two amazing DIY projects coming up tomorrow. So sorry to make you wait but we didn?t want to crowd out the party that really did take center stage. Plus, we wanted an excuse to remind our weekly readers that we?re hear blogging on Sundays so it?s really jut a shameless plug for SMP at Home!

Can?t wait to hear what you think of the party! AND, I would love to hear and see all about the dinner parties that you are throwing at home. Anything you?ve found that makes it easier? Cheaper? Fun? We?d love to know!

Thank you to everyone who made this little dinner party so very special!

Amzer Shellster ShellCase and Holster review

The Shellster ShellCase by Amzer is an inexpensive but solid snap-on case and holster for the HTC One X, HTC One S, HTC EVO LTE, and Samsung Galaxy S 3. Both the case and the holster have steep, pronounced horizontal ridges that add a ton of grip, though the edge of the case is simple and smooth. The holster’s clip doubles as a kickstand and works great in both landscape and portrait orientation. Best of all, the combo is really affordable at $14.95.

Digital Gifting Startup GiftRocket Hits Profitability, Announces API And Reduced Fees

logo_vector_transparentGiftRocket, a 2011 Y Combinator grad, is a simple P2P digital gifting service that lets users send and receive digital gift cards via email. Originally, the startup was focused around location-based gifting, allowing friends to send each other digital gift cards that could be accessed once they checked-in to a certain location. With some angel funding behind it, the startup pivoted to a more universal use case, becoming a way to easily gift cash within a digital eCard. Co-founder Kapil Kale tells us that, since that change, people have begun to use the service as a replacement for traditional gift cards and gift certificates and usage has increased as a result. Today, the startup is announcing that it's profitable thanks to a $2 million in sales in 2012 (and what he expects to be $5 million run rate by December). It's also making some additions and changes to its service, including an API, bulk orders and reduced fees.
