Meteorologist: supersonic skydive 'a go' on Sunday

(AP) ? The weekend weather in New Mexico appears to be cooperating this time for a daredevil trying to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier.

Meteorologist Don Day said the weather forecast remained favorable for former Austrian paratrooper Felix Baumgartner's jump, scheduled for early Sunday near Roswell, N.M.

Baumgartner will be prepared at sunrise to launch his 30 million cubic foot helium balloon to hoist a 3,000-pound capsule that will carry the jumper 23 miles up in the sky. The jump has already been canceled twice due to high winds, once damaging the balloon and forcing use of a backup for Sunday's planned launch.

Baumgartner will try to break a 1960 high-altitude parachuting record. He will also test a pressurized suit that is designed for stratospheric jumps.

He called Tuesday's postponement nerve-wracking but said Sunday's date is one already steeped in aviation history. On October 14, 1947, an experimental rocket plane Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier for the first time over Edwards Air Force Base in California.

"I want to break the speed of sound, no matter what it takes," he said in a statement. "As long as we have a spare balloon and more launch days, I'm good."

California may set trend easing '3 strikes' law

More than a decade after California set a national trend toward longer sentences for habitual criminals with its three-strikes law, crime in the Golden State is down, prison costs are up - and voters are poised to soften the hardline stance.

A California ballot measure that would let some nonviolent offenders out of jail faster is the most high-profile example of what Adam Gelb, a criminal justice expert at the Pew Center, calls "a sea change across the country in attitudes on crime and punishment."

While the main financial backer of the campaign to pass the measure is a liberal billionaire, it has drawn support from religious conservatives, fiscal hawks and a broad array of constituencies who have supported "tough on crime" policies in the past.

California isn't the first state to revisit policies that have caused an explosion in inmate populations and in some cases jailed people for many decades over relatively minor infractions. In 2007, Texas faced more than $2 billion in new prison costs and chose instead to plow $240 million into alternatives such as treatment-oriented programs for nonviolent offenders.

In Delaware, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and New York, mandatory sentencing laws have been rolled back. Other states are revising parole standards and adding programs to let prisoners earn early release, according to a recent Pew study.

And a September 2012 study by the Council of State Governments found seven states were succeeding in cutting recidivism rates, by 6 percent to 18 percent, often by focusing on nonprison programs and treatment.

Conservative and liberal backing
California's measure is not a radical change, but sending a clear signal to legislators nationwide that it's politically safe ? even smart ? to embrace sentencing reform could prove especially important.

The coalition that is backing the California initiative, known as Proposition 36, illustrates the shifting politics of criminal justice. George Soros, the legendary investor who has backed many liberal causes, has donated $1 million. Conservative leader Grover Norquist, the president of Americans for Tax Reform, has endorsed it.

The Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, the NAACP, and district attorneys of San Francisco, Los Angeles County and Santa Clara County - Silicon Valley - are all behind the proposition.

More broadly, faith-focused leaders, such as Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, are backing more cost-effective approaches to crime and punishment through groups like Right on Crime.

"Social conservatives and fiscal conservatives, for the last 30 years, have not applied the same level of scrutiny to the criminal justice area as they have applied to other levels of government," said Craig DeRoche, the former Republican Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives who is now vice president of sentencing reform group Justice Fellowship.

Filling prisons with people who are not a threat to society is expensive and often works against integrating felons into a crime-free life, he said.

Californians are not getting soft on violent crime: Polls show that an attempt to repeal the death penalty, which is also on the November ballot, has only a slim chance of success.

Proposition 36 also is a relatively narrow adjustment to 1994's Proposition 184, known as Three Strikes and You're Out, which lengthened sentences for repeat offenders. The new proposition would let some criminals who have been in jail twice (two strikes) avoid a 25-years-to-life sentence for a third crime if it is judged to be nonviolent and nonserious.

Each side uses portraits of prisoners to make its point.

Prop 36 supporters describe Shane Taylor, who had two strikes called against him for committing two burglaries 11 days apart when he was 19. His third strike was for possession of 0.14 grams of methamphetamine, and he was sentenced to life in prison.

The California District Attorneys Association says inmate Douglas Hall shows how the system keeps dangerous, habitual criminals off the streets. Hall's strikes included a robbery during which he fired a rifle at victims and involuntary manslaughter in which he stabbed the victim 11 times, according to a report by the group. He was convicted of possessing heroin, and because it was a third strike, he was sentenced to 25 years to life. If he were resentenced under Prop 36, his maximum sentence would be seven and a half years, the DAs say.

Support in polls
Recent polls show wide and deep support for the measure, above 70 percent.

In a late-September University of Southern California/Los Angeles Times poll, 66 percent of respondents favored Prop 36. A majority of every single subgroup, divided by political party, race, family status, income, region of the state, ideology and gender favored the measure, according to the mid-September survey of 1,504 people.

Opponents of Prop 36 say voters don't understand what they are doing. District attorneys already have significant leeway to show mercy to potential third-strike offenders, and they use it, said Carl Adams, president of the California District Attorneys Association. The new law could tie their hands in pursuing long sentences for some individuals with histories of violence, he said.

The reach of the measure is limited, though; only about 2,000 of California's roughly 133,000 state prisoners would be released early if the proposition passes, according to the non-partisan Legislative Analyst's Office, which projects the state could save about $70 million to $90 million annually.

Those figures don't compare with the number of inmates who will have to be moved out of the state prison system under a court order aimed at eliminating dangerous overcrowding. The court's target is a population of 110,000 next year, down from more than 160,000 in 2006.

"California's criminal justice system is undergoing historical levels of reform," said Sarah Lawrence, a prison system policy researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, Law School.

Roughly 25,000 prisoners who would have been in state prisons will be sent instead to local jails by 2015, the state Department of Corrections says. Ideally the local authorities will be better placed to help nonviolent offenders make the transition into their communities, but many counties will struggle to afford the necessary support systems.

Crime in California, like the rest of the nation, has dropped dramatically since the early 1990s. State violent crimes are down by more than half and homicides by nearly two-thirds since 1992. Harsher sentencing was probably part of the reason, Lawrence said, but a lot of the most dangerous folks are now behind bars, and there may be better ways to raise public safety.

"Your bang for the buck goes down the wider you make the net," she said.

If Californians use the ballot box to say they want their state to try to find smarter ways to deal with prisoners, others will listen, said Pew's Gelb. "Precisely because California's three-strikes law is so notorious, any changes in that law will reverberate around the country."

(AP) ? In what sounded at times like a locker room pep talk, Jerry Sandusky rambled in his red prison suit about being the underdog in the fourth quarter, about forgiveness, about dogs and about the movie "Seabiscuit."

With his accusers seated behind him in the courtroom, he denied committing "disgusting acts" against children and instead painted himself as the victim.

And then, after he had said his piece, a judge sentenced him to 30 to 60 years in prison Tuesday, all but ensuring the 68-year-old Sandusky will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the child sexual abuse scandal that brought disgrace to Penn State and triggered the downfall of his former boss, football coach Joe Paterno.

He leaves behind a trail of human and legal wreckage that could take years for the university to clear away.

"The tragedy of this crime is that it's a story of betrayal. The most obvious aspect is your betrayal of 10 children," Judge John Cleland said after a hearing in which three of the men Sandusky was convicted of molesting as boys confronted him face to face and told of the lasting pain he had inflicted.

The judge said he expects Sandusky to die in prison.

In a disjointed, 15-minute address before he learned his sentence, Sandusky said: "In my heart I did not do these alleged disgusting acts."

Sprinkling his remarks with sports references, the former assistant coach spoke of being locked up in a jail cell, subjected to outbursts from fellow inmates, reading inspirational books and trying to find a purpose in his fate. His voice cracked as he talked about missing his loved ones, including his wife, Dottie, who was in the gallery.

"Hopefully we can get better as a result of our hardship and suffering, that somehow, some way, something good will come out of this," Sandusky said.

He also spoke of instances in which he helped children and did good works in the community, adding: "I've forgiven, I've been forgiven. I've comforted others, I've been comforted. I've been kissed by dogs, I've been bit by dogs. I've conformed, I've also been different. I've been me. I've been loved, I've been hated."

Sandusky was convicted in June of 45 counts, found guilty of raping or fondling boys he had met through the acclaimed youth charity he founded, The Second Mile. He plans to appeal, arguing among other things that his defense was not given enough time to prepare for trial after his arrest last November.

Among the victims who spoke in court Tuesday was a young man who said he was 11 when Sandusky groped him in a shower in 1998. He said Sandusky is in denial and should "stop coming up with excuses."

"I've been left with deep painful wounds that you caused and had been buried in the garden of my heart for many years," he said.

Another man said he was 13 in 2001 when Sandusky lured him into a Penn State sauna and then a shower and forced him to touch the ex-coach. "I am troubled with flashbacks of his naked body, something that will never be erased from my memory," he said.

After the sentencing, prosecutor Joe McGettigan praised the victims' courage and dismissed Sandusky's comments as "a masterpiece of banal self-delusion, completely untethered from reality and without any acceptance of responsibility."

"It was entirely self-focused as if he, again, were the victim," McGettigan said.

Lawyers for the victims said they were satisfied with the sentence, but with four lawsuits brought against Penn State and several more expected, and Penn State laboring under severe NCAA penalties, cleaning up in the wake of what may be the biggest scandal in college sports history may take years.

Ben Andreozzi, an attorney for one the victims, said the university needs to do more: "It's important they understand before we get into serious discussions about money, that there are other, noneconomic issues. We need apologies. We need changes in policy. This isn't just about money."

Penn State fired Paterno after Sandusky's arrest, and the coach died of lung cancer three months later. The scandal also brought down university President Graham Spanier.

Two university administrators, Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, are awaiting trial in January on charges they failed to properly report suspicions about Sandusky and lied to the grand jury that investigated him.

Over the summer, an investigation commissioned by Penn State and led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh concluded that Paterno and other top officials covered up allegations against Sandusky for more than a decade to avoid bad publicity.

After the report came out, the NCAA fined Penn State a record $60 million, barred the football team from postseason play for four years, cut the number of scholarships it can award, and erased 14 years of victories for Paterno, stripping him of his standing as the winningest coach in the history of big-time college football.

In a three-minute recorded statement aired Monday night by Penn State radio, Sandusky described himself as the victim of a "well-orchestrated effort" by his accusers, the media, Penn State, plaintiffs' attorneys and others ? a claim the judge dismissed on Tuesday as an unbelievable conspiracy theory.

"I speak today with hope in my heart for a brighter day, not knowing if that day will come," Sandusky said. "Many moments have been spent looking for a purpose. Maybe it will help others, some vulnerable children who might have been abused, might not be, as a result of the publicity."

After the sentencing, Penn State President Rodney Erickson said in a statement: "Our thoughts today, as they have been for the last year, go out to the victims of Jerry Sandusky's abuse. While today's sentence cannot erase what has happened, hopefully it will provide comfort to those affected by these horrible events."

Denying payments doesn't cut hospital infections

By Julie Appleby, Kaiser Health News

A Medicare payment policy designed to push hospitals to cut their infection rates has had no effect in reducing two types of preventable infections among patients in intensive care units, researchers say in the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

In 2008, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services began denying additional payments to hospitals whose patients became sicker as a result of bloodstream infections and urinary tract infections associated with the use of central lines or catheters.

Researchers looked to see whether denying additional payments would spur hospitals to cut their infection rates, comparing those infections with a type of pneumonia not targeted by the payment policy.

?The financial penalty did not further reduce infection rates, which were already going down because of multitude of (infection control) campaigns and interventions that were already ongoing,? said the study?s lead author Grace Lee, associate professor, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute and Harvard Medical School.

Infections picked up by hospitalized patients are an area of growing concern. It is estimated that about one in 20 hospitalized patients get an infection, resulting in up to $33 billion in additional costs each year. Efforts to reduce the rate of infections include public reporting requirements and the payment policy in Medicare, which is now being expanded into state Medicaid programs.

Other studies have found the payment policy resulted in increased attention by hospital leaders, sometimes at the expense of other infections not targeted by the policy.

As policy efforts expand, the researchers say ?careful evaluation is needed to determine when these programs work ? and when they have unintended consequences.? They did give did give some caveats about their findings: The study looked only at patients in the ICU, for example, so it can?t say if infection rates in other parts of hospitals changed. Researchers tracked data reported to the National Healthcare Safety Network by 398 hospitals from January 2006 to March 2011.

Many of those 398 hospitals were voluntarily reporting that data even before the payment policy was implemented, which means they may have been further ahead in their infection control efforts than others, thus resulting in no additional slowdown after the penalties, says Lisa McGiffert of Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports.

She and others say efforts to affect hospital payments and to publish infection rates do work.

?When you start affecting payments and publishing results, it does get the attention of leadership in a hospital,? said McGiffert. ?This study shows it?s enormously difficult to connect a singular policy with progress.?

The study is consistent with data from other studies, including one recently completed by the American Hospital Association, said Nancy Foster, vice president for quality and patient safety policy at the association. Those studies have shown an ongoing decline in infections that pre-dated the payment policy.

Still, Foster said a key piece of any effort to reduce hospital infections is not just to count the number of patients who have problems, but to have a specific, detailed prevention strategy. Preliminary results from the association study found a 40 percent reduction in central line-associated bloodstream infections in intensive care units when they used a team-based approach.

?With infections, you need a series of things you?re doing right each and every time. Not just washing hands, although that is important. Not just the right antiseptic, not just the right antibiotic. But all of those things together,? said Foster. ?That?s the shift in perspective hospitals have gained.?

CMS spokesman Brian Cook did not address the study results directly, but said the 2010 federal health care law strengthens policies to reduce infections in hospitals. ??We?re confident that these polices will improve health care quality and reduce costs,? Cook said.

Two Americans Share Nobel Prize In Chemistry

Two Americans have won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Koblika were awarded the prize for their work on protein receptors that tell cells what's going on around the human body. Their research has allowed drug makers to develop medication with fewer side effects. The pair with share the $1.2 million award.

AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:

Today, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to two Americans. They won for their work on sensors or receptors that sit on the surface of cells. The receptors make cells respond to chemical signals that your body releases when you react to the outside world. Maybe you were frightened by a sudden noise or you just smelled a tantalizing cup of coffee. NPR's Nell Greenfieldboyce explains how these receptors work and why they're so important to medicine.

NELL GREENFIELDBOYCE, BYLINE: Shortly after they called the winners to tell them the news, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences held a press conference this morning. They had one of the winners on the phone to talk to reporters. Robert Lefkowitz said when the fateful call came, he didn't even hear the phone ring because he was sound asleep and wearing earplugs.

ROBERT LEFKOWITZ: And so my wife gave me an elbow - phone for you. And there it was, a total shock and surprise.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: He said he had been planning an ordinary day at the office.

LEFKOWITZ: I was going to get a haircut but...

(LAUGHTER)

LEFKOWITZ: ...which, if you could see me, you would see is quite a necessity. But I'm afraid that it'll probably have to be postponed.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Reached by phone later on, he said he had canceled his haircut. His wife told him: Don't worry. Slightly disheveled is a good luck for Nobel Prize winner. His day had been a nonstop frenzy of phone calls, not just reporters but friends and also his five adult children who were duly impressed.

LEFKOWITZ: I was actually taken aback by how excited they were. I mean, not that I wouldn't think they'd be excited that Dad won the Nobel Prize, but they just seemed like over the moon.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Lefkowitz is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at Duke University Medical Center. He started his research back in the early 1970s hunting for receptors on the surface of cells that are sensitive to the flight or fight hormone, adrenaline.

LEFKOWITZ: There was tremendous skepticism as to whether they existed at all. And early in my career, that was the biggest obstacle or hurdle I faced. There was a lot of pushback that, you know, you can't do this. These receptors aren't really things you can study. They're just kind of some vague something.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Work in his lab showed how wrong that view was. His group found the gene for a receptor and revealed that it was part of a large family of receptors called G protein-coupled receptors. Lots of common medications act on these receptors, everything from anti-histamines to beta blockers. So understanding how the receptors work at the molecular level could help scientists design better drugs.

LEFKOWITZ: It is amazing to me to watch over the 40 or so years of my career, how this field has grown and grown and exploded. And it's now a huge, huge field. I mean, I have to be honest. I can't keep up with all the different ramifications anymore.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Lefkowitz is sharing the Nobel Prize with a close colleague who once worked in his lab. Brian Kobilka is now at Stanford University School of Medicine. Kobilka spent years trying to get a detailed picture of one of these receptors in action to show exactly how it passes a signal from the outside of the cell to a protein inside the cell. This seemed so impossible that at times his lab struggled to get funding. But just last year, he announced that they had done it. Chuck Sanders is a biochemist at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

CHUCK SANDERS: I was in China about a year and a half ago where he presented his work for the very first time at a meeting. And there was just a hush of awe in the audience when he flashed the structure up on the screen. It was a really, really major accomplishment.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Sanders says this kind of scientific feat isn't luck.

SANDERS: He was only able to do that because he had basically devoted his life to studying these receptors. And it was his knowledge of these receptors that led to the technical breakthroughs that led to that structure.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Reached by cell phone a few hours after he'd been told he won the Nobel, Kobilka sounded kind of stunned.

BRIAN KOBILKA: I'm still a little - in a little bit in disbelief. But I'm pretty sure this isn't dream a anymore.

(LAUGHTER)

KOBILKA: I guess I have to - I guess it's real.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: He says when the call from Sweden woke him up, he knew it couldn't be some kind of practical joke. There were just too many people on the line, all congratulating him with very convincing Swedish accents. Nell Greenfieldboyce, NPR News.

The problem with self-improvement is knowing when to quit ...

What do you want to improve? Finances, relationships, household repairs, car repairs, game playing, computer skills? It?s all at your local library, bookstore, or on the internet. Get busy!

What does that mean?
For me, that?s an easy question to answer: you stop when you are done improving, growing, and learning. In short, I?ll stop trying to improve myself when I?m ready to die. Until then, every day is another opportunity to learn and improve myself.

Given the nature of the person who said the quote, and the flippant nature of many of his comments, I would presume he was attempting to be funny with this quote. And to an extent, it is. But it is also a serious subject as well.

When do you quite improving? When you think you?re done. Are you ever going to be perfect? Nope. Will you ever achieve ?good enough?? Probably. Will you be satisfied at that level, or will you want more? Or perhaps you will be done with that aspect of yourself, and begin working on other parts of yourself. The answer will be different for each of us.

Why is self-improvement important???
Are you all you can be? Are you all you want to be? I suppose if you set your sights low enough, you could answer yes to both questions. But those questions are directed inward, and are easily diminished, diluted, or ignored by those who consider their present state ?good enough.?

Instead, I would ask another question, one that is directed outwards. Are you able to give or help others in a manner that you are truly proud of, or is there room for improvement? I can easily come up with excuses and reasons why I?m good enough for me. But it?s harder to come up with excuses, much less reasons, for others.

To me, there is always room to improve. Sometimes we improve ourselves for our own benefit or amusement. Other times we do it for the benefit of others. But whether it?s our bodies, our minds, our skills or our spirits, there is always something that can be improved. What do you want to improve today?

Where can I apply this in my life?
The others you help could be your family, your friends, your social groups, or the world at large. If you were acting as the treasurer of a social group, could you contribute more (or better) if you took a class (or read a book) on accounting? Self improvement would help you help others, right?

I recently lost 30 pounds and am starting on an exercise and fitness program to help keep me in shape and healthy. Since my teenage boy took up Track & Cross Country running, he can now out-pace and out-distance me. That?s a first for me, and it isn?t sitting very well. 8)

I doubt I?ll catch up to him in either speed or endurance. But I do hope that improving my fitness level will help me stay healthier and stronger for a longer period of time. That is both for my sake and for the sake of my family. I know that at some point, I?ll be ?good enough? at running, but I am certain that I?ll never be ?good enough? to quit improving myself.

Take a moment and think about your life. From your viewpoint, what parts of your life are perfect, and what could use some improvement? With respect to your outside-yourself life, what parts of what you do for others is perfect? After you have that list put together, consider everything else in your life that could stand to be improved in some way shape or form.

OK, that was a little silly. You probably have some ?good enough? aspects in your life, and your outside-yourself life. But I can?t imagine anyone could actually believe they were able to put down that they were perfect at anything, unless you were being a little silly?

So, what of the long list of things at which you could improve yourself is at the top of your list? Is it internal aspect, or something for how you work with others? What is the goal, and how will you know when you have achieved it? You might want to grab some paper and start making notes.

What steps are there between where you presently are and the end of the goal? Big steps, so that you get from here to there in a couple of steps. Each of those steps will have lots of sub steps, but get the high level view of where you?re going on paper.

For learning to play chess, it might be ?get a chess board, find a chess club (real-world or online), find some chess software, get a book or two, practice, practice, practice!? Ok, that might have been a little simplistic, but you get the basic idea, right?

Take the first thing you will do, and break it down into smaller chunks, eventually into things you can do in a single step. For getting a chess board, you might want to look online for a couple different boards you like and can afford, then head down to a local game shop and see what they have (I prefer to support local stores when I can).

The last thing to do is to take the first step. It?s not real until you act, so get busy. Do the first thing, and build some momentum. It doesn?t have to be big, but it does have to happen. Tomorrow is not soon enough. Unless you?re ready to quit.

Growth worries weigh on shares, Mid East tension lifts oil

LONDON (Reuters) - A warning about the global growth from the IMF sent European shares lower for a second day on Tuesday despite a move by China to support its flagging economy, while escalating tensions between Turkey and Syria in the Middle East sent oil higher.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares fell 0.2 percent at 1,098.80 points, adding to a loss of 1 percent on Monday, with share markets in Germany <.gdaxi>, and the UK <.ftse> between 0.2 and 0,5 percent lower

The falls came after the International Monetary Fund cut its 2012 global growth forecast to 3.3 percent from 3.5 percent, just a day after the World Bank reduced its outlook for East Asia. The IMF also warned that a failure by U.S. and European policymakers to fix their problems could prolong the slump.

The worries offset the positive mood in Asian markets which followed China's injection of around $42 billion of cash into money markets, boosting speculation it may soon do more to support slowing growth.

"Given the softness in the economy and given where inflation is, there is certainly scope for China to be more active on the policy front," said Ian Richards, global head of equities strategy at Exane BNP Paribas.

Meanwhile a warning from Turkish President Abdullah Gul that the worst case scenarios between his country and Syria are now playing out sent Brent crude oil towards $113 a barrel.

"Right now the market is concerned about the continuing conflict between Syria and Turkey, and the worry is that if it escalates, it may disrupt supplies," said Ker Chung Yang, senior investment analyst at Phillip Futures in Singapore.

The most active Brent futures contract was up 0.5 percent to $112.48 per barrel while its premium over U.S. oil jumped to $22.5 per barrel, the highest since October 20 last year.

Elsewhere uncertainty over Spain was keeping the euro on the back foot and supporting German government bond prices.

Euro zone ministers said on Monday Spain did not need a bailout yet, dashing investors' hopes they might inch closer to a resolution of the country's debt problems.

The euro bought $1.2975, little changed from late U.S. levels but almost a full cent below a two-week high of $1.3072 hit on Friday.

German bond futures were 16 ticks higher at 141.55 in early trade while yields on Spanish 10-year bonds were slightly higher at 5.75 percent.

Stocks face earnings and data hurdles

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks could struggle to stay close to nearly five-year highs next week as worries mount about third-quarter earnings and the market appears primed for a pullback from recent stimulus-driven gains.

A bevy of economic reports, including durable goods orders, will grab attention, particularly after the Federal Reserve unveiled its plan on September 13 for a third round of aggressive stimulus to help revive the flagging U.S. economy.

While the action ignited a rally in stocks, analysts have worried that it may suggest the U.S. economy is in worse shape than many had feared.

To be sure, stocks are at lofty levels and are likely to attract investors hoping the market will ride out the year on a positive note. The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> and the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index <.spx><.inx> remain close to highs not seen since December 2007. The S&P 500 is up 16.1 percent since the end of 2011.

"I think the market certainly is ripe for a pullback. But whatever the pullback, it's going to be rather shallow," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, in New York.

"Any disappointment in key economic data that would reverse the market's feeling the economy has stabilized, I think could trigger a 2 to 4 percent pullback," he added.

Some of that move was seen this week in stocks, which posted slight losses for the week. The S&P 500 slipped 0.4 percent for the week. The Dow industrials and the Nasdaq each finished the week down 0.1 percent.

Besides August durable goods orders, data on personal income and spending is due next week, as well as new home sales and the final read on U.S. Gross Domestic Product for the second quarter.

Housing data has been surprisingly strong in recent months and homebuilder shares have experienced massive gains. The PHLX housing sector index <.hgx> is up 62.3 percent since December 31. But that strength has been offset by worrisome data on U.S. manufacturing, which had been among the economy's strongest sectors. The stubbornly high U.S. unemployment rate also has kept a damper on Wall Street's mood.

THIRD-QUARTER GLOOM AND DOOM

Profit warnings from such high-profile U.S. companies as FedEx helped cement the view this week that third-quarter results could be a drag on the market.

"We've had some pretty negative pre-announcements, and those announcements for this time frame have been a little more than we've had in the past," Cardillo said.

Estimates for S&P 500 companies' third-quarter profits have fallen sharply in recent months, and earnings now are expected to drop 2.2 percent from a year ago, according to Thomson Reuters data. It would be the first such decline in three years.

Outlooks for the third quarter are at the most negative since the third quarter of 2001, the data also showed. The negative-to-positive ratio for the upcoming earnings period stands at 4.3 to 1.

Third-quarter earnings aren't expected to start in earnest until after the second week of October, when Alcoa is expected to kick off the reporting period.

"What I'm worried about is what I don't know," said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management, in New York.

That includes negative surprises on earnings, he said, as well as the chance that China's economy may be slowing faster than economists previously thought.

"The aggressiveness of the (Fed's) quantitative easing has caused me alarm," Cote said.

FLOOR FOR THE MARKET

The Fed's recent action followed a decision by the European Central Bank to support debt-ridden euro-zone nations by purchasing their debt.

Speculation on Friday that Spain was moving toward a bailout request gave investors some relief. The debt-laden country, which is likely to stay in focus next week, said it was considering freezing pensions and speeding up a planned rise in the retirement age as it raced to cut spending and meet conditions of an expected international sovereign aid package.

Both central bank moves are expected to provide a floor for the market, possibly through year end, analysts said.

"Financial markets will benefit more than the economy," said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co., in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

With the Fed's decision out of the way, investors are also likely to turn their attention to other issues, including November's U.S. presidential election, he said, and looming decisions about U.S. fiscal policy.

Out: Three giant rallies a day. In: Fundraisers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Four years ago, the presidential contenders were packing airplane hangars, city squares and college arenas in a sprint to Election Day. This year, the rallies are fewer, the gatherings often smaller.

Barely six weeks before the election, where are President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney spending their time? Fundraisers. The high costs of seeking the presidency ? and changing ideas of how to win ? are shifting campaign schedules at the expense of time-honored candidate-to-voter interaction.

Out: Hopscotching to a couple of states a day, spending hours shaking hands with voters, posing for pictures and trying to win support the old-fashioned way.

In: A quick public event, then a beeline to a hotel ballroom to speak to donors who shell out $50,000 a ticket ? money to pay for TV ads, polling, office space, mailing.

This week, for example, why was Romney in the reliably Republican states of Utah, Texas and Georgia? To collect checks before dashing off to campaign events in Florida, which is still highly competitive, and Las Vegas. Obama picked up some $4 million at a Manhattan fundraiser hosted by entertainer Beyonc? and hubby Jay-Z before a more-traditional, shirtsleeves-in-a-ballpark rally in Woodbridge, Va., on Friday.

Not everyone loves the new reality.

"Romney doesn't seem to be out there campaigning enough," wrote Peggy Noonan, a Wall Street Journal columnist and former speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan. "He seems ? in this he is exactly like the president ? to always be disappearing into fundraisers and not having enough big public events."

Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who was a constant at Sen. John McCain's side during his 2008 presidential bid, put it more directly: Romney should go to the states that are in play and essentially live there.

"In my view, what he should do in the last 45 days .... is pretty simple. If we win Virginia, and one of Ohio or Florida, we're going to win this thing. If I were Mitt Romney, no person in Virginia could go very long without meeting me," Graham said. "This is not rocket science."

Romney is at least acknowledging the criticism. Advisers now say the former Massachusetts governor will increase the tempo of his campaign itinerary so it more closely resembles the intense schedules that have marked previous presidential contests. Next week's schedule includes as many as three stops a day in Colorado and Ohio.

But these advisers also note the hefty price tags on this year's campaign. A week of advertising in Florida alone costs $5 million.

This is the first presidential contest in which both major-party candidates have opted not to accept federal money to pay for their general-election campaigns. In the past, taking the federal dollars allowed contenders to spend the final weeks before the election shaking hands instead of cashing checks. It's not new for Obama: He reversed his pledge to accept public financing in 2008 and instead relied on his own fundraising firepower for the general election.

It's not just about fundraising. With each passing week, it seems the number of states both Obama and Romney are contesting shrinks. At this point four years ago, Obama was advertising in 16 states. These days, he's advertising in nine.

Fewer states in play can mean less reason to travel. But when candidates do travel, they're spending their time differently.

In 2008, for example, GOP candidate McCain didn't miss a chance to glad-hand with a crowd, swinging by the Minnesota State Fair on short notice while in the state for other events.

This year, Romney opted against doing the same, going straight from the airport to a high-dollar fundraiser in a swanky neighborhood and back to the airport. It was the fair's opening day in August, but the only shots of Romney that TV crews got was of a motorcade ? a missed chance to lead the local news.

With the campaign entering its most intense period, Romney's main activities include rehearsing for the three upcoming presidential debates, in addition to raising money. Obama's been spending many days at or near the White House.

Compare Sept. 15, 2008, with Sept. 15 of this year.

Four years ago, it was a Monday when Obama held a town hall-style meeting in Grand Junction, Colo., a 14,000-person rally in conservative Pueblo, Colo., and a fundraiser in Los Angeles. McCain had a morning rally for 3,000 in Jacksonville, Fla., and a town hall event in Orlando. Joe Biden, running for vice president, was at Michigan rallies in Saint Clair Shores and Flat Rock. Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate, was in Golden, Colo.

This year, on a Saturday, Obama was not seen in public and didn't leave the White House. Romney did not have public events, but watched a grandson's soccer game and took wife Ann to an Italian dinner. Biden was at home in Delaware. Only Romney running mate Paul Ryan campaigned; he was in Oldsmar, Fla.

Syria's Assad says rebels will be defeated

Arabic reads on the vehicle, "Free army". Rebels have taken a major stride in uniting their ranks in the battle for Syria?s largest city, giving them hope they could tip the balance in three-months of bloody stalemate in Aleppo, one of the biggest prizes of the civil war. The question is how much more destruction the city can bear. Regime troops are retaliating with heavier bombardment, and civilians are bearing the brunt, their neighborhoods left in rubble. (AP) ? The Syrian president said in remarks published Friday that he is adamant his regime will not fall and he also lashed out at Gulf countries, which he accused of using their enormous oil wealth to try to drive him from power.

Bashar Assad's comments came as an opposition group, the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria, accused the regime of being behind the disappearance of two of its leaders.

Abdul-Aziz al-Kheir and Ayas Ayyash were expected to take part in a conference Sunday in Damascus by some 20 Syrian groups that are calling for Assad to step down. But they disappeared Thursday along with a friend who had picked them up at Damascus International Airport, the group said.

The group's head, Hassan Abdul-Azim, told The Associated Press by telephone that the regime was believed to be behind the disappearance.

Syria's crisis began in March last year with anti-government demonstrations inspired by the Arab Spring and demanding reforms. The protests were met with a brutal crackdown by the regime. Syria later became embroiled in a civil war between forces fighting for Assad and those trying to topple him.

Activists now say that nearly 30,000 people have been killed since the crisis began, the vast majority of them civilians.

After Assad's remarks were published, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi told state-run TV on Friday that the president had received nine Egyptian journalists and had a chat with them about the latest developments in the country.

The minister said none of the journalists took notes as the meeting was considered a "personal visit," but a reporter for the weekly Al-Ahram Al-Arabi published some of what was said.

The weekly quoted Assad as saying that the rebels "will not succeed" and that a foreign military intervention such as the one that helped topple Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi will "not be repeated" in Syria.

In his remarks, Assad also launched one of his harshest attacks on Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which have been among his strongest critics and backers of the opposition, saying they are trying to influence the region with their money.

"They think their money can buy geography, history and a regional role," Assad said, according to the Egyptian weekly.

"They are giving terrorists weapons and money with hope of repeating the Libyan model," Assad added. "Instead of helping regional stability, they are supplying armed elements with weapons and training in order to weaken the Syrian state."

The upheaval in Syria presents an opportunity for the Gulf's Sunni rulers to bolster their influence and possibly leave Shiite powerhouse Iran without its critical alliances that flow through Damascus. Assad's regime, which is allied strongly with Iran, is led by the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Syria's ties with the Gulf nations have been strained in the past ? Assad once called Saudi King Abdullah and other Arab leaders "half men" for being critical of Hezbollah over the 34-day war between the Lebanese Shiite militant group and Israel in 2006.

In the briefing, Assad added that the only way to solve the Syrian crisis is through "dialogue with the opposition" and that the "door for dialogue is open."

Most Syrian opposition groups reject any talks with the regime, saying they will not accept anything less than Assad's departure from power and the dissolving of his regime's security agencies.

Abdul-Azim, the opposition leader, repeated that stance and said the opposition wants a "new regime that represents the will of the people."

He added his group will go ahead with the plans for Sunday's opposition conference despite the disappearance of the two leaders. The gathering will invite European ambassadors, envoys from China and Russia, which back the regime.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Friday that nearly 30,000 Syrians have been killed during the 18-month uprising against the Assad regime, providing an updated death toll.

The Observatory's count includes 20,935 civilians; 1,153 army defectors fighting alongside the rebels; and 7,141 Syrian troops fighting for the Assad regime ? which gives a total of 29,229, said the head of the group, Rami Abdul-Rahman.

The list is compiled from reports by witnesses and medical staff, he said, adding that he only includes those identified by name or whose death was authenticated by amateur video. Several thousand who are presumed dead, including pro-Assad troops, have been kept off the list because the bodies could not be identified.

Another Syrian opposition group, the Local Coordination Committees, put the overall death toll at 26,405. However, its count does not include Syrian troops killed in battle. The LCC relies on a network of activists in Syria to collect its information.

Fighting in Syria has intensified in recent week, with the regime increasingly relying on airstrikes to try to drive rebels out of territory they are holding, particularly in the country's north. The air attacks, along with the use of heavy weapons by some of the rebels, have driven up the daily death toll, said Abdul-Rahman.

On Thursday, more than 250 people were killed, including 199 civilians, five army defectors and 46 regimes soldiers, Abdul-Rahman said. August has been the bloodiest month so far, with nearly 5,000 dead.

Meanwhile, in Syria's northeastern town of Ein al-Arab, a gunman on a motorcycle shot dead a leading Kurdish opposition figure, Mahmoud Wali, also known as Abu Jandi, as he walked out of his office late Thursday, Kurdish activists Mustafa Osso and Ibrahim Issa said.

Wali was a senior member of the Kurdish National Council, which includes several Kurdish groups.

Osso said it is still not clear who was behind what he said was a "political assassination."

On Friday, activists reported clashes and shelling in different areas around Syria, with the fighting being most intense in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial capital. The fighting there came a day after regime airstrikes hit a gas station in northern Syria, setting off a fiery explosion that killed at least 30 people and wounded dozens.
